LES believes in a balanced approach to literacy.  Currently, we are using theTrophies anthology, by Harcourt Brace, along with guided reading books as our reading program.  Students share stories as a whole class, focusing on a specific reading skill or strategy.  Students also work in small groups at their reading level.  Opportunities for shared reading, read alouds and independent reading are also available.

Our writing curriculum is focused around the "Empowering Writers" approach.  Students work on specific parts of the writing diamond (beginning, description, elaborated main event, ending) in isolation, then apply their learning to an integrated story.  Lower grades focus mainly on narrative story writing, while upper grades begin expository writing.

LES believes on a hands-on approach to the teaching of mathematics.  We use the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley Mathematics program as the way to teach our curriculum.  Students are given a variety of experiences with a skill or concept before mastery is expected.  In addition to this program, students work on memorizing basic math facts and have many opportunities for problem solving.

Grade levels take their spelling lists from stories in our reading anthology.  Each list focuses on specific phonetic element.  Students work with these words, and other words that follow the pattern, during multi-sensory activities such as "Cast-a-Spell."  Each grade level also focuses on high frequency words from the Sitton list.

The related arts are an important part of each child's day at LES.  Students have art, music, library/media, PE and science & technology once a week for 45 minutes.  Related Arts teachers work with classroom teachers to integrate topics of study into their lessons.
