Dear Parent/Guardian:
Would you believe your child is entering high school next year?  During the eighth grade, he or she will begin making important decisions about high school and beyond.  To help students with these decisions a variety of activities are planned.  Last year the students were administered the Career Occupational Preference Inventory (COPS) where they identified and researched occupations that interested them.  September 20th the students heard a presentation by  school counselors from Windham and Norwich Regional Vocational-Technical Schools, about their programs and application procedures.  In the fall students will hear a presentation by the counselor from the Arts At The Capitol Theater, a magnet school that focuses its programs on performance, theater production, dance, creative writing and audio/video production.  A visit to Lyman Memorial High School will take place in December to tour the building and hear about special programs that require applications such as Agriculture Science.  In February after hearing presentations from Lyman Memorial High School Counselors and receiving the program of studies, the students will develop a four- year high school plan and complete their freshman schedule.  I encourage you to discuss with your child his/her plans and dreams.

The school counselor and eighth grade language arts teachers will be doing an integrated career unit called “On the Job Day” where a student spends a day at the place of employment of an adult other than a parent, guardian, or close family relative.  The adult may be a friend, a neighbor or non-acquaintance.  Students are asked to visit a job site that they are personally interested in, not just one that is convenient or comfortable to arrange.

The purpose of the “On the Job Day” is to allow each student to experience directly the real world of work.  Through this opportunity, the student will be introduced to someone who actually is in a career field doing work that they are thinking of doing in the future.  By observing and having a dialogue with someone who works in their field of interest, students will gain first-hand knowledge as well as having the opportunity to share a unique experience with an adult.

Each student must personally contact the potential adult host and make the arrangements for the job site visitation.  We will help the student find contacts whenever possible.  Each student is expected to stay for the entire workday with the host (a normal workday being eight hours).  Transportation to and from the job site must be arranged by the student

The “On the Job Day” shadowing must be scheduled during a school vacation.  Vacation days are as follows:

October 8, 9

November 12, 13, 22, 23

December 24 - 31

January 1, 21, 22

February 18 - 22

March 21, 31

April 14 - 18

While at the job site, it is expected that each student will record information through observing, discussing, interviewing and, if possible, participating in some of the duties involved in that line of work.  Students will have folders or notebooks with them to assist in collecting data and carrying out the goals that are part of the experience.

Attached to this letter is a contract that needs to be completed by the parents and students.  Please review it.  Sign and return the form to Miss. Millerd, Mrs. Wilson or me via your son or daughter on or before October 12, 2007.

If there are any questions or concerns please feel free to call Miss Millerd at 642-5648, Mrs. Wilson at 642-5671 or me at 642-5627.

Sincerely,
Barbara J. Bostrom

“ON THE JOB DAY”

WRITTEN REPORT

Due on or before April 25, 2008

You will hand in a polished piece of typed size 14 font, at least two pages in length.  This paper will be about your job site visit.  It will be written as a narrative, meaning a factual account of your day.

It MUST have three parts to it.  The FIRST part, the introduction, has to tell where you went, who your host was, what the job was that you experienced and what the work place was like (a physical description of the place).  The SECOND part, the body, includes key information about what you learned about the job and your interest in it. The THIRD part, the conclusion, of the piece has to explain what you did or saw while on the job site that you found interesting and/or memorable.  If nothing interesting happened, explain why in this section. Summarize the high and low points of your experience.   End with an explanation if the job furthered your interest in this career.

All of the required information for this report can come directly from the answers your host gave you based on the interview questions you were supplied and were expected to ask while on the job site.  Please staple the notes you took on these questions to your finished, polished report.  These notes will be considered your draft for this piece.
